Happy Rama Navami: Celebrate the birth of Rama

by Brandi Moore on March 25, 2010

Today is Rama Navami which celebrates the birth of Rama the 7th incarnation of Vishnu. Rama was created to destroy the evil king Ravana and his live is captured in the Ramayana one of the most readable Hindu epics.

This is the beginning of several festivals that celebrate Rama in different ways.  Rama Navami, celebrating his birth at noon is followed by Dussehra for a period of about 10 days when the Ramayana is acted out all over India.  On the last day, idols are created of Rama by villages and are set on fire to demonstrate Ranava’s defeat.  Several months pass and the final celebration is Diwali when all of India commemorates the return of Rama and Sita to their kingdom.

Rama is considered to be the ideal man and husband for his strength, pursuit of justice, and compassion.
